MLA works closely with the Goat Industry Council of Australia (GICA) from research and development project conception and development, right through to the selection of research organisations. Together MLA and GICA host annual producer forums in each member state to seek input on levy investment.
MLA also takes investment direction from the which guides investment into the development of the Australian goatmeat and livestock industry through to 2020. As the industry’s representative, GICA has carriage of this plan and it is designed to address the challenges and opportunities the industry faces in the coming five year period as well as the investment priorities outlined in RedMeat 2030, developed by the Red Meat Advisory Council which provides the overarching strategy for the red meat industry of Australia.

Research is in progress to determine how rangeland goats respond to feed supplementation. This will assist in the development of a cost-of-supplement calculator that will be available for goat producers.
Internal parasites continue to be a major challenge for goat producers, with few effective drenching products registered for use in goats available. Research is underway to inform veterinarians of the best approach to drenching goats.
A recently completed MLA goat levy-funded project has explored using goat tallow in beauty products to create value-adding opportunities for the industry.
MLA North America recently worked with US chef Grant Morgan to develop a recipe using Australian goatmeat for one of the US foodservice industry’s most influential publications – Flavor & The Menu magazine. The US is Australia’s largest export market for goatmeat.
